You are not behind; you are starting
A significant number of adult students, including many new Muslims, begin Quran learning with zero prior exposure to Arabic script. This is a completely ordinary starting point, not a deficiency to apologize for. One-to-one lessons exist precisely so there is no classroom of children to feel compared against, and no pace but your own.
Privacy and comfort
Online, one-to-one lessons offer a level of privacy that many adult beginners find genuinely helpful. There is no group setting, no risk of being asked to read aloud in front of unfamiliar peers, and no need to explain your starting point to anyone beyond your tutor. If you would prefer a female or male tutor for comfort, state this clearly when you enquire.
A realistic starting pathway
Most adult beginners start with Noorani Qaida to build letter recognition and basic reading mechanics, even if they already recognize a few words from memory or repeated exposure. From there, Quran Recitation builds fluency with real text, and Tajweed can be introduced once reading feels steady. Adults sometimes progress faster than children through the mechanical stages simply due to stronger existing study habits, though this varies considerably by individual.
Fitting practice into a busy adult life
Consistency matters more than length. Ten focused minutes most days will outperform an occasional hour-long cram session. Many adult students practice during a commute (using audio review), during a lunch break, or in the quiet minutes before family life picks up in the evening.
Understanding, not just reading
Many adult beginners eventually want to understand meaning, not just read accurately. Tafseer and translation study is available once a learner is ready, and can run in parallel with ongoing reading practice rather than waiting until reading is 'finished', since reading fluency continues to develop for years regardless.
